Getting Started With Protect Ads: A Complete Guide for New Users
New to Protect Ads? This comprehensive guide takes you from account creation through Google Ads connection, tracking code installation, protection activation, dashboard setup, and your first optimizations — everything you need to start blocking click fraud today.
This guide covers everything you need to go from zero to fully protected Google Ads campaigns with Protect Ads. Whether you manage a single account or an MCC with dozens of clients, follow along to start blocking click fraud and improving your advertising ROI.
Step 1: Sign up and explore the dashboard
Create your Protect Ads account and log in. Your dashboard is the central hub for everything: account connections, domain management, protection rules, real-time monitoring, and reporting. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the layout — especially the Protection Status, Blocked Traffic, and Settings sections.
Step 2: Connect your Google Ads account
- Navigate to Connect Ad Account in the dashboard sidebar.
- Click Connect Google Ads and authenticate with your Google account. Protect Ads uses Google's official OAuth flow and authorized API access, so the connection is secure and compliant.
- Select the Google Ads account or MCC you want to protect and grant the required permissions: campaign-data read access and IP-exclusion-list management.
- Once connected, Protect Ads will begin syncing your campaign structure. You can add or remove accounts at any time from the dashboard.
Step 3: Add your website and install the tracking code
- Go to Domain Settings in the dashboard.
- Enter your website domain and copy the tracking code snippet provided.
- Add the snippet to the
<head>section of every landing page that receives Google Ads traffic. You can also deploy it globally using Google Tag Manager for easier management. - The tracking code is lightweight and asynchronous — it does not affect page-load speed. It enables Protect Ads to analyze visitor behavior, evaluate risk signals, and trigger real-time blocking when fraud is detected.

Step 4: Select campaigns to protect
- In the dashboard, choose which Google Ads campaigns or domains to protect. You can enable protection for all campaigns simultaneously or start with your highest-spend or highest-risk campaigns.
- Verify that the protection status shows Active for each selected campaign. The system starts monitoring and blocking immediately.
Step 5: Configure your protection settings
- Threat level: Choose between "high threat only" (strictest, fewest false positives) and broader levels. Match the setting to your industry's risk profile.
- IP whitelist: Add your office, agency, partner, and testing-tool IP addresses to the whitelist so they are never blocked.
- Custom rules (if available on your plan): Define industry-specific blocking criteria such as maximum clicks per IP per hour, geographic restrictions, or user-agent filters.
- Save your settings. Protect Ads applies them instantly across all protected campaigns.
Step 6: Monitor, optimize, and report
- Check the dashboard regularly for blocked traffic counts, threat-level breakdowns, and estimated budget savings. These metrics give you real-time visibility into the value of your protection.
- Use the data to refine your Google Ads strategy: shift budget away from high-fraud campaigns, adjust geographic targeting based on threat patterns, and improve your audience quality for retargeting.
- Export reports for stakeholders and clients to demonstrate the ROI of your click fraud protection investment.
Once everything is in place, Protect Ads works continuously in the background — detecting, blocking, and syncing with Google Ads in real time. You focus on growing your business; Protect Ads ensures your budget reaches real customers.
